The former foreign minister Jorge Taiana is the new president of Mercosur Parliament (Parlasur ). This year, Argentina assumed the presidency pro tempore of this body replacing Venezuela, who had entrusted that role to Saul Ortega during 2015.

Taiana had been elected vice president of Parlasur by an absolute majority of the entire body, which are the representatives of all the member countries of Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela), at the last meeting of the year held on 14 December 2015 in Montevideo, where the body meets.

Regarding his task in front of Parlasur, Taiana said that "the integration of Mercosur had a big boost in its first decade of existence, but now, following global and regional economic situation, there has been a stalemate. so my aim will be to achieve greater activity of the block, increasing the number of recommendations made by the Mercosur and achieve a rapprochement between all countries. "
